  1. “An open letter. To the owner / overweight guy that sits in the air conditioned office in this park; you suck. For those reading who are not familiar with this park, it is over by Landmark Mall, a public space. The layout is an expanse of green grass to one side, a huge concrete skate park, football pitch, all with its own car park. Then, on the outskirts of the park, is a basketball court with its own car park, out of the way of all the places to sit and walk. You do not enter the park to pkay basketball. It has its own entrance. For months now, a group of us have been playing basketball on this court, single, 16-25 year old guys just exercising and playing hoops respectfully, quietly, and not disrupting anyone. Now, this loser in the office has decided that people? having fun in Qatar? No way, this cannot be allowed. So, from the safety of his air-conditoned office, he has decided to enforce his Security Guards to kick us off a basketball court that is rarely ever used. Now, their grounds for this are that 'this is a family park'. We have to bring out family (back home!) to the park to be allowed in. So, one of the guys this past week bought his Dad along. And guess what? 'you have to be 14 or under'. So he returned with his brother, and got kicked out again. Why? 'the park is for 10 years and under only'. Idiots. They even tried to claim that we were 'keeping families from using the court' and this is cr*p, and here is why. To approach the court, you have to go out of your way to get to it. Anytime we see a family approaching, with a ball, we clear off the court. And I mean clear off, as in go round the corner. We don't sit there intimidating, or watching. We leave. Then, when the family has left, we go back on. These are little kids, who don't have the strength to play for hours, so they have their 25 minutes on there and usually leave. Let us, for a second, explore this stupid notion of the court being for '6 year olds'. The hoops are regulation 10 feet high. Is that a child's court to you? The concrete around the baskets is peeling, and leaves gaping holes that you have to avoid carefully from tripping over (many of us have). Is that a child's court to you? There is a film of dust across the court which gives it a very slippery surface, which we counter-act by wearing basketball sneakers. The dust is never swept. Is that a child's court to you? The whole episode stinks of a mini-Hitler, asserting his dominance on bachelors in this country, just like they do in the malls, just like they do everywhere in this hell-hole. We come here, leaving our families behind, to do the job that you cannot be bothered to do, and all we want is a measly basketball court for 2 hours every so often, and you cannot give us that 'luxury'. Pathetic. We are not drinking alcohol. Not leering at women. Not talking to anyone. Not swearing. We have been allowed to play there for months. This is the park for the local community, and even if you ignore my anger, this loser is kicking out kids of the age of 13 from their own park. 2 things. No wonder Qatar has an obesity issue with things like this. And Qatar is bidding for the Olympics? I am sure the I.O.C would love to hear what you are doing for grass roots sport in local areas. Also, ZERO respect for not getting off your backside from your air-conditioned office, and getting your under-paid security to do all your dirty work. You have never done a day's exercise in your life, and cannot understand playing sport, judging by the size of you. This will change nothing, but I hope it highlights just how this country treats people. Oh, and these families that you will claim we are 'offending'. Most of the Dad's come to watch us while their kids play in the park, and applaud at seeing a good competitive game of basketball. I don't hear any of them shouting to 'kick us out'. He threatened to call the police and have us arrested. Can't wait to see myself on Al-Jazeera, in jail, on charges of playing basketball in a public place.” – cu27 (12 years ago)
  2. “Nice enough for Doha standards and in a public place so you won't have to get thrown out of a compound or pretend you are visiting someone just to get play some hoops. Court is in okay condition, though rough under the basket with missing tarmac. Security may ask if you have a family (it is a family park) but just tell him you are playing bball; singles are allowed in that area. Backboards are straight, hoops have netting, and there are a couple of benches to watch the action from. I have played ball across the world, and this court pales in comparison. I would give it a 3/10; because it is free, easy access and has floodlights at night. The poorly maintained tarmac, lack of three point line, and wear and tear let this court down. ” – cu27 (12 years ago)
